![]() He’s got a crack team behind him, led by campaign manager Paul Zara ( Philip Seymour Hoffman), and top hot-shot consultant Stephen Meyers ( Ryan Gosling). It’s fine!ĭoes The Ides of March take place in 2008 or 2012? Who knows! Whenever it’s set, Governor Mike Morris (Clooney) is running for President – but he’s got to secure the democratic nomination first. Co-written, directed and co-starring George Clooney, this obviously outdated look at American politics finds its groove as middling entertainment. Gosling, a rising star, participated in a role that, ironically, did not rise his talents to the surface.Does anyone remember The Ides of March? I ask in good faith – classy, Oscar-nominated dramas featuring multiple movie stars rarely go so forgotten. ![]() On an unrelated note, the cast did a pretty good job it's always great to see such likeable actors like Seymour Hoffman with his powerful wittinness and Giamatti with his complicated characters. His directorial scope is definitely talented, but not sufficiently vast to adapt a memorable story that compells the audience to experience something further than just a thrilling ride with dramatic turns, but he definitely should keep trying given that his statements are still pretty much related to his previous ones, which were actually featured in better movies. Clooney is certainly a fan of political controversy, questioning the moral ambitions of those involved either in politics or in the media. The 2011 film adaptation of the play "Farragut North" by Beau Willimon is a sufficiently entertaining and decently acted exchange of blackmails and opportunistic individuals in the political world, where "every mistake is magnified". I would like to live in a world where George Clooney runs for president. However, this is utterly enthralling with a tight script and excellent cast. I did find the ending slightly underwhelming and frustrating, probably because it's the ending I didn't want. Absolutely fascinating, although slightly hyperbolic. Corruption, persuasion, blackmailing.the brutal reality of politics have negative effects on campaigners, so much so that their lives could potentially be destroyed. Politics is harsh and the screenplay really hones in on campaigns doing anything they can to win. Hoffman, Clooney, Giamatti, Tomei.the list goes on and every one of them gives a cold stern performance. A talented and likeable cast certainly helped, particularly Ryan Gosling who just keeps on excelling in every role he gets. It's no different here, I was captivated from start to end. The political sub-genre is a guilty pleasure of mine and really showcases some excellent concise screenplays. This is George Clooney's baby he directed, wrote, produced and starred in the film.I was mightily impressed. Believing in an idealism even if the man representing that ideology is not entirely innocent or perfect. Most importantly though, this is a film about loyalty and how it is the most important trait to acquire in the world of politics. Acknowledging every move your opponent makes and having to predict what they will do. A glimpse into the inner workings of a political campaign and how simply one mistake could cost a senator the presidential seat. Honestly surprised we don't have more films about political debates! The reason why I compared this to chess was due to the intelligent methodology that these campaigns used against each other. ![]() The Ides Of March makes politics look like an intense game a chess.
